I CAN do something not related to rowing!

We actually had a weekend where I did almost nothing rowing related (except for practice Saturday morning).   Here is my "non-rowing" life in pictures.  Doesn't happen very often!

Such a nice weekend with my boys.  The house looks great and we all got a much deserved break from all things rowing.

Garden update... It's growing very well. I can't complain about the size of the plants, but I'm a little worried about the zucchini and squash again.  I see lots and lots of boy flowers, open, ready, willing and able...but the girl flowers...  Those that might be girl flowers are small, tiny and closed up tight.  WTF???  What do I have to do to make my squash have sex?  The cucumber plant is growing like crazy and I can't quite tell about it's flower, so I'm just going to let it go and see what happens.

Veggies....Year #2

I got the second annual Hyzy Veggie Garden up and planted today.  I enjoyed my garden last  year even though my squash and zucchini were celibate and while they looked beautiful... they were fruitless....
I talked to the "help desk" at the Nursery and they claimed they'd never heard of that problem and it must have been a fluke.  Only me!
I planted my peppers in the shade of the enormous, but fruitless, squash so they didn't get enough sun and I only got one stunted pepper.  I didn't pick my herbs enough and they flowered and quit growing...

But...Lessons learned....  Hope springs eternal; I've replanted with lessons learned and I will anxiously await the "fruits" of my labor!

The other exciting thing... last weekend I discovered that over the winter my tomatoes had reseeded themselves.  I must have left a tomato or 2 to rot in the pot and they started themselves up.  How could I ignore that?  My little determined tomatoes!  I'm also going to try growing Leeks this  year.  I wanted to do green onions, but I couldn't find any and I wasn't sure if green onions were the same as regular onion that  you pick before they get too big and no one at the nursery could really answer the question. So leeks it is!

*****UPDATE*****  I just went out to help my plants have sex and only the boy flowers were awake and ready... TYPICAL!!!!



Here is the first bounty from my initial stab at gardening.  Can I say, I am pretty proud of myself.  I almost hate to eat them, I just want to leave them out for everyone to look at and admire.

Sadly though I must report that my zucchini and squash are not having sex!  They are all dressed up in beautiful flowers, but not getting any action.  Now if these same flowers were my teenage children I would pat myself on the back and consider it a job well done, but...they are not...

So that is how I find myself on Sunday morning googling for plant porn which believe it or not I found here.  I love Google, I hope those Google boys are rich and happy, because you can find ANYTHING on Google!  Anyway, so now I am prepared to go forth and molest my zucchini's and hopefully that will result in lots and lots of babies!

At least when the Zombie Apocalypse hits we'll have lettuce!

My small, manageable I hope garden

 I have decided for some unknown reason to dip my toes in the murky, mysterious waters of home gardening.  My history is not great, just ask my mom.  She has a totally huge, I mean jolly green giant huge, green thumb.  Me, not so much.  As the years have progressed, my black thumb has morphed into a vague, sickly green color.  I don't necessarily kill every thing I touch, now it's more of the benign wasting disease of neglect.  I always start out enthusiastic, gung-ho full of dreams and ideals.  I'm going to single handedly bring nature back to the city, purify our household air and teach the kids about the wonder of nature... but then slowly and insidiously I begin to get distracted, lose interest and the next thing I know I have pots full of sad, droopy dead "use to be" plants.  But NOT THIS TIME! :o)
I decided to start small and manageable and instead of investing too much time an effort in creating veggie beds, I would use containers.  Small, manageable and easy to keep track of, or so I hope.  So, I ordered books, I did my research and I planted... tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, mixed lettuces, squash and herbs.  And I waited....

And believe it or not... it grew and it's still growing.  Right now all we have is lettuce, but nothing has died, nothing has wilted, rabbits haven't found it and I have hope!
